The union is specifically concerned that the team's ownership might be holding Brees' active participation in last year's lockout against him during his contract negotiations. Although Brees is seeking a long-term extension of his contract with the Saints, the team has placed an exclusive rights franchise tag on him which means that if a deal is not struck by July 16, Brees will be required to play under a one-year deal worth $16.3 million. The coming year is sure to be a tumultuous one for the Saints in the wake of the players' lockout, bounty scandal, and now the uncertain future of its star quarterback.
