Jameis Winston, a Heisman-winning quarterback from Florida State University, was cited in Tallahassee for theft of groceries under $35 in groceries from a Publix Tuesday evening. A statement released by his attorney states that Winston had paid for his groceries and simply forgot a few items in the basket when he walked out. He was not arrested, but issued a civil citation for the theft.

Mr. Winston will have 7 days to contact the sheriff to be admitted to a civil citation program aimed at 1st time, non-violent, and non-sexual offenders that allows them to fulfill the citation with community service rather than any jail time. Once completed in the time frame allotted, the citation will not appear on his record.

Winston, a pitcher for the Seminole baseball team, has been suspended due to the incident, but will likely be reinstated once the community service is fulfilled.

Winston was cast into the spotlight after being accused of rape by a fellow FSU student in 2012. However, he was not charged criminally and the case has been moved to inactive, but a civil suit is being pursued.
