Owen Wilson’s Attempted Suicide: Courtney Love Risks Slander Suit With Steve Coogan

Posted on Aug 29, 2007 in Celebrity Justice

Owen Wilson attempted suicide on Sunday; his camp isn't denying it, and the confirming 911 police log is already floating through the media.  Lots of folk love Owen Wilson -- including Courtney Love, who has gone public with US Weekly, telling the magazine that it's all Steve Coogan's fault.  [Interesting sidenote: this morning, Wilson announced he was dropping out of Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder, where he and Coogan both had supporting roles.] The New York Post is reporting that Courtney Love blames British actor Steve Coogan for supplying Owen Wilson with drugs - specifically heroin and cocaine - and fueling a severe addiction.  Fox News is quoting Courtney Love.  Steve Coogan is fighting back in the media, making denials and warning that he's talking with his lawyers. What did she say? What all has Courtney Love risked by defending her friend Owen Wilson?  US Weekly's story includes the following quote: "I went through it with Steve," rocker Courtney Love, who dated Coogan, 41, until an acrimonious split in 2006, tells Us. "I was just out of rehab, and he was right there with the drugs," she says. "I tried to warn Owen. I tried to warn his friends ... I hope from the bottom of my heart that Owen stays the hell away from that guy." US Weekly also notes that it has two sources that are blaming Steve Coogan, not just Love. Courtney's safe -- not that Coogan might not threaten suit, or even file suit.  She's got untold media outlets with their teams of lawyers as protection: this quote would not have hit the shelves and screens if Fox attorneys, US Weekly attorneys, and New York Post attorneys weren't comfortable with it.  They're potential co-defendants with her in any lawsuit that Coogan might file. Plus, what every lawyer recalls from Torts 101 that first year of law school: when facing an allegation of libel or slander, truth is the defense.  I'm betting that all those lawyers confirmed that Courtney Love's statements were truthful and that's why we're getting to read all this today. Looks like Owen Wilson may have picked a bad friend in Steve Coogan, but it also looks like he's got a lot of good friends, too.   Good for him, and all the best for a quick recovery.
