How To Choose the Right Personal Injury Attorney

Posted on Sep 20, 2018 in Personal Injury

Driving around the city you see them everywhere. You couldn’t miss them if you tried: giant, looming faces, smiling or looking serious, towering above interstates and busy intersections.

They watch over our fair city, ever vigilant, always ready. Their catchphrases and jingles are ubiquitous, tracing through the mind of the citizen like a Top 40 single.

No, they aren’t Marvel superheroes. They are personal injury lawyers.

It seems like every week another billboard crops up for another attorney. And an internet search for personal injury attorneys in New Orleans returns pages of results.

But if you have been injured and are seeking representation, how do you find the right attorney?

Interview Potential Attorneys

Before you hire a lawyer you should interview them a bit. After all, you are hiring them for a service, so take some time to make sure you are hiring someone you will be satisfied with.

There are all kinds of different types of law that a lawyer may focus in—far too many to list here. There might be a lawyer with a great record in divorce court, but they don’t know anything about personal injury. If you are seeking damages for an injury, make sure you seek out lawyers with a focus in personal injury.

Many lawyers offer free phone consultations. This provides a great opportunity to ask some questions of the lawyer, to see whether they will be a good fit.

Here are some good questions to ask your lawyer during the initial consultation:

  • How long have you been practicing law?
  • Have you dealt with cases like mine before? If so, what was the outcome of some of those cases?
  • How do you keep in touch with your clients? Do you have a preferred method of contact? If I contact you how long should I expect to wait to hear back from you?

It’s also important to discuss pricing and fees up front. Ensure that you and your lawyer will be on the same page should you decide to work together. Ask questions like:

  • How much do you normally charge for a case like this?
  • Do you charge by the hour or a flat rate?
  • Do you offer payment plans?

Don’t be afraid to talk to a couple different lawyers before making a decision. You want to make sure you can communicate well with your lawyer and are comfortable with them, since you will be working and interacting with them on a regular basis once your case gets under way.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Everyone knows the big dogs like Morris Bart and Gordon McKernan. They are like the Amazon and Walmart of local personal injury. But sometimes the personal touches and customer service can get lost in the bigger firms.

Bigger firms like those two often serve whole regions and areas. A smaller firm won’t only be able to provide more personal and focused representation, but also often has the local expertise and availability that the bigger firms can’t match.
