Where the petition is filed

LaSalle Parish is in the Alexandria Division of the Western District, so a § 2241 petition for someone held at Jena is filed there. Under SO 1.61, your case joins the district-wide immigration habeas rotation, so the assigned judge may sit outside Alexandria. The Clerk serves the petition under SO 1.74. Details are in our § 2241 filing guide.

Jena is also known as LaSalle and is a common first stop for people moved into Louisiana. If your client is moved on, confirm the new facility before filing; a move to Angola changes the district.

Attorney FAQ

Is the petition filed in immigration court or federal court?

Federal court: the Western District of Louisiana, Alexandria Division. The removal case continues separately before EOIR.

Will an Alexandria judge hear the case?

Not necessarily. Under SO 1.61, immigration habeas cases are assigned district-wide.

Do I need to serve the respondents myself?

No. Under SO 1.74, the Clerk serves federal respondents by email and the warden by mail after the court’s screening order.

Which immigration court has my client’s removal case?

Check EOIR’s case portal or call 1-800-898-7180. A transfer does not move the case unless an immigration judge grants a change of venue.

How quickly can local counsel be engaged?

Call 504-599-9997. For time-sensitive matters, call rather than email.
