SCOTUS Upholds Affordable Care Act

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="220" caption="Photo Courtesy of Wikipedia.org"][/caption]The Supreme Court ruled this morning in a landmark decision to uphold President Obama's Affordable Care Act (AKA the controversial 'Healthcare Law'). Substantially, the Court's ruling declared that the so-called individual mandate survives legally as a tax and that the other essential provisions of the bill survive. The primary portion of the bill that was limited by the Court's ruling is the federal government's ability to curtail Medicaid funding to states that fail to comply with the act's requirements. Surprisingly, Chief Justice John Roberts voted to uphold the bill, in an apparent effort to maintain the Court's credibility among the American public and cited concerns about erring on the side of constitutionality when considering the legality of bills passed by the nation's legislature. Given the breadth of the Court's opinion and limited access to it, this story will develop as further information is made available. For live blogging of the opinion as it parsed, visit SCOTUSblog.
