The new Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Joseph
Cordileone, attempted to make light of his recent drunk driving arrest
at the ceremony commemorating his taking office. Mr. Cordileone was
arrested near San Diego State University at a DWI checkpoint, with his
mother and a visiting priest from Germany in the car with him. Mr.
Cordileone joked at the mass, "I know in my life God has always had a
way of putting me in my place. I would say, though, that in the latest
episode of my life God has outdone himself." Pleading to a lesser
charge of reckless driving, Mr. Cordileone potentially faces three
years of probation and a fine.
