City Council passed the following ordinances last week to some mixed reviews. Many people have complained in recent years about the old ordinances being hard to enforce, specifically the ladder-height to curb placement. The City Council passed that any ladders, regardless of height, will have to be placed at least 6 feet from the curb. In addition, furniture, tents, port-a-pottys, and other obstructions will no longer be allowed on public property. The old ordinance allowed people to park on the opposite side of the street from the parade, but the new ones will allow no vehicles to be parked along the parade route. Some say these ordinances are too restrictive and will hinder the fun and revelry that make up the Mardi Gras tradition. Councilwoman Jackie Clarkson said hindering the fun of parades is not the goal, but "...it is our intention to make it safer and more enjoyable".
