Photo courtesy of Google Maps.[/caption] April crime reports for MidCity’s Crime Prevention District show a 40 percent drop compared to last year’s figures of the same time frame. For April of 2013, records indicate that 45 total crimes occurred in this area compared to only 27 for April of 2014. Last year there were four murders in the defined district, while this year there has yet to be a single one. While rapes, armed robberies, and assaults show no significant change, the amount of property crimes have significantly decreased. The district seems fixated on preventing crimes during times of increased traffic. Sgt. Sam Palumbo was glad to report that no “major” crimes occurred during the city’s 2014 Jazz and Heritage Festival. He also reported that they have been beefing up security at Bayou Boogaloo to deter crimes.
