Consider the Consequences: Driving While Drunk Is Never a Smart Move

Posted on Oct 31, 2016 in DUI/DWI

Drunk driving is one of the most common causes of fatal crashes in the city. As a result, New Orleans DUI attorneys often have their hands full. And although we enjoy our work, we would prefer drivers to stay safe on the roads and make good choices when they drink. After all, driving under the influence of alcohol does not just put your life in danger, it puts the lives of all others on the road, or near the road, in danger as well. Everyone from fellow drivers at intersections to construction workers and police officers doing their jobs are at risk when you choose to drive while drunk. Many times, those harmed by a drunk driver are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, as drivers, we have the opportunity to protect ourselves and those around us, every time we get behind the wheel. So, because we care about your safety and the safety of our community, we wanted to offer a few pieces of advice for navigating the open roads.

As a Driver

It would be easy for us to tell you to never drive drunk, so we will! Don’t drive if you’ve been drinking. However, we understand that you may make the choice to get behind the wheel after having a few drinks. But, before you do, consider the consequences. Is it worth the financial penalties you could incur? First and second offenses may cost you $1,000 and the prices only increase from there. Additional jail time and potential license suspension makes driving under the influence a lot less appealing, right? We thought so. And if the financial toll isn’t enough, then consider the potential fatalities you could cause—either your own or someone else’s. The effects of something like that will surely impact the families of those involved for a lifetime. And that’s a pretty heavy burden to carry.

As a Sober Bystander

If you happen to be sober and are driving, walking, standing, or otherwise near a roadway when you see a suspected drunk driver, there are things you can do to keep yourself safe. First and foremost, keep an eye out for drivers who seem to be driving erratically. Whether they are going too fast, too slow, or swerving over the lines, you’ll want to make sure you keep your distance. Getting to your destination on time is never as important as keeping yourself safe. So if that means taking a detour or safely staying out of the way until the questionable driver has passed, it’s always a good call. Speaking of which, you may be inclined to report a drunk driver in an effort to protect others on the road. The course of action you take is up to you.
