When you leave your children with a babysitter, you are placing a great deal of trust in the fact that they will be well taken care of. For many parents, choosing a reliable adult you can count on to put your kids’ wellbeing in front of their own is a decision that is not taken lightly. As a result, you generally expect to discover that the babysitter in charge will take their position seriously. However, there are some times when the person you’ve trusted with your children is not as responsible as you would have expected them to be. This can be dangerous for everyone involved. A news story out of Slidell reminds us of this. This spring, a woman was charged with DWI. Although this is traumatic as it is, what makes this situation worse is that she was babysitting two young children when she crashed into a utility pole. The children--a four-year-old and a one-year-old, were not properly secured in the car. As a result, the four-year-old sustained a fractured skull and broken shoulder; the other, a broken leg and shoulder. Both children were taken to the University Medical Center in New Orleans. Police Chief Randy Fandal responded to the event by saying, “Nobody's child should be placed in danger by a drunk driver...this woman was entrusted to keep these children safe. Not only was this irresponsible, but it was criminal." We send our best wishes to the family of the injured children and hope that they will make a full recovery.
You Can Avoid Drunk Driving
In the wake of this accident, we believe it is necessary to remind all drivers how important it is to only get behind the wheel while sober. When you make the choice to drive while intoxicated, you put not only yourself at risk, but you increase the chance of accident or injury to the other people in your car and the other drivers on the road. In this case, two children were harmed due to their babysitter’s choices. These days, there are countless other options to driving while intoxicated. You can use public transportation, a rideshare service, a taxi, or willing family and friends to get you where you need to go. Although these may seem like less convenient options, they are far safer in the long run. We always encourage individuals to take the extra steps to keep themselves and those around them safe, if they’ve been drinking. However, we also understand that there are times when your better judgment may not be as strong as you would like. And if you’ve been charged with a DWI or DUI, you can rest assured that New Orleans DUI attorneys are here to help. We have experience helping clients address their legal burdens, so they can move forward with their lives. After all, one choice should not haunt you for the rest of your life.
