NOLA Ready to Kick Off 2012 Mardi Gras Season
Posted on Jan 7, 2012 in Local Issues, Mardi Gras
A Tulane University professor’s new study released Friday shows that last year’s Carnival season brought in more than $300 million to the city, mostly generated by visitors. This year, expectations are even higher. Haydel’s Bakery, a local family-owned business, is gearing up to make over 60,000 King Cakes to meet demand this Carnival season. They’re even debuting a new flavor: chocolate brownie.
In addition to the usual Mardi Gras traditions, there are some new things to keep an eye out for this year. The all-female Krewe of Nyx will roll Uptown on the Wednesday before Mardi Gras. With 530 members and 20 floats, they will be the first, new full-fledged krewe in the city in 10 years.
It’s a welcomed newcomer to a celebration in a city that will once again have the eyes of the world on it come Fat Tuesday.
