Woman Found Guilty of Killing a Pedestrian Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison

Posted on Feb 28, 2017 in DUI/DWI

If you have a driver’s license, and even if you don’t, then chances are that you’ve heard the old saying, “Don’t drink and drive.” Unlike many commonly heard phrases, this is one that you really should pay attention to. After all, getting behind the wheel is a huge privilege, but also a huge responsibility. As a driver, you’re operating a pretty heavy vehicle at fast speeds. While this is convenient for getting yourself where you need to go, it also poses some risks for pedestrians if you’re not on the lookout. A recent development in a two-year-long story reminds us of the importance of paying attention to where you’re going and drives home the fact that we should always be sober when we get behind the wheel. In October of 2015, Quintella Williams struck and killed a pedestrian while under the influence of alcohol. After striking the victim, she attempted to drive away from the scene of the crime with the victim’s body still on her roof. Last month, Ms. Williams plead guilty to vehicular homicide, making no statement in court regarding her responsibility for the death of the victim. Ms. Williams was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Due to the fact that her blood alcohol content at the time of her arrest was greater than 0.15, she’ll spend the first five years of her prison sentence without the possibility of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

Drinking and Driving: It’s Not All About You

In the wake of this decision, we feel it’s important to stress just how devastating drinking and driving can be. Not only did the victim’s family lose a loved one, but Ms. William’s family also lost a daughter and a mother, as Ms. Williams has three elementary-school-aged children. Cases like these just go to show how quickly so many lives can be changed, all due to one driver’s decision to drink and drive. That said, we understand that once you’ve had a few drinks, you may not be making the most coherent choices. What may clearly be a bad idea to a sober person can easily seem like a great idea to someone who is intoxicated. These days, while there is never an excuse to drink and drive, we know it happens more often than anyone would like. And whether you’ve been injured by a drunk driver or been charged with driving under the influence, it can be daunting to consider facing your legal battle on your own. Luckily, you don’t have to.
