Getting Your License Back

Posted on May 13, 2015 in Drugs, DUI/DWI, Uncategorized

Your Louisiana driver’s license can be suspended for a number of reasons, from nonpayment of child support, to getting too many demerit points on your driving record, to a conviction for reckless driving or impaired driving. No matter the reason for the suspension, not being allowed to drive is a major burden. You want to get your license back as quickly as possible and you should talk to a New Orleans suspended license attorney for help with the process. How to Get Your License Back After a New Orleans License Suspension The first step to getting your license back after it has been suspended is to fulfill any court requirements that have been imposed. You should have been informed of the court requirements when your license suspension was handed down by the judge. The requirements will vary depending on why your license is suspended. You may need to complete a safe driving course, undertake drug or alcohol counseling, complete a term of probation, do community service or fulfill any number of court requirements.  You must have proof you have satisfied the court and fulfilled all orders before you are able to move forward with getting a suspended license back. Once you have completed the court-ordered requirements associated with your Louisiana license suspension, the next step is to submit all of your compliance documents to the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles.  You can submit the documents in person at your local office or you can mail the documents to the Office of Motor Vehicles. Submission in person is usually the fastest and best way to move forward, as the reinstatement can be processed immediately when you go in person. If you submit your documents and request for a license reinstatement by mail, there is a processing time of 10 business days.  A suspended license attorney in New Orleans can help you to get documents and paperwork together so you can show you are ready for the return of your license. If your license was suspended for driving impaired or certain other offenses, you may be required to file an SR22 form from your insurance company. This is essentially a special type of proof of insurance form. You should note, however, that when you ask your insurer for the SR22 form, your insurance rates are likely to go up significantly.  The SR-22 form will need to be submitted with the other paperwork needed to show compliance with your court order. Finally, whether you request reinstatement of your suspended New Orleans driver’s license by mail or in person, you must pay a fee for reinstating your license. You should send the fee via mail if you do not apply for reinstatement in person. You are not eligible for a reinstatement until the required minimum license suspension period has ended. If you need to drive in the meantime, a suspended license lawyer in New Orleans may be able to help you petition for a hardship license. Contact our office to learn more.
