Alcohol was a factor is more than half of these accidents. The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign provides grants to local law enforcement agencies to increase patrols and fund increased checkpoints. "If you plan on drinking this holiday season, please have a plan and make good decisions.", says Colonel Mike Edmondson, Louisiana State Police Superintendent. In 2013, Louisiana police made over 21,000 DWI arrests and alcohol was a factor in about 42 percent of fatal crashes. Although it is illegal for anyone under 21 to drink alcohol, Louisiana had about twice the average number of 18 to 20-year-old drivers involved in alcohol-related crashes.
