Discussion: Is Big Law a Thing of the Past?

Everyone has heard of the big firms in the city. So why are more and more clients preferring smaller firms? There is a very simple explanation.
Back in the old days, big firms had their libraries, and a multitude of lawyers for every case. These were both necessary for handling cases, especially the bigger, more complicated ones. Today, however, with the advancements in technology, every lawyer has the same access to the same sources of information. This means that where in the old days (before the internet) we would need two lawyers and a law clerk for a job, today that same job can be done by one lawyer, and in a fraction of the time.
So it is very simple. Today, clients seem to prefer the leaner, dedicated team of lawyers that they get from the small law firm where their business is top priority—the personal touch. And they get it at a fraction of the price. So this begs the question: Are big law firms a thing of the past?
