Players’ Assoc. Asks NFL to Investigate Brees/Saints Contract Negotations
Posted on Jun 27, 2012 in Local Issues, Saints, SportsIn a week filled with Saints headlines, the NFL Players’ Association (NFLPA) has requested that the league investigate the pending contract negotiations between quarterback, Drew Brees, and the team.
The union is specifically concerned that the team’s ownership might be holding Brees’ active participation in last year’s lockout against him during his contract negotiations.
Although Brees is seeking a long-term extension of his contract with the Saints, the team has placed an exclusive rights franchise tag on him which means that if a deal is not struck by July 16, Brees will be required to play under a one-year deal worth $16.3 million.
The coming year is sure to be a tumultuous one for the Saints in the wake of the players’ lockout, bounty scandal, and now the uncertain future of its star quarterback.
