Second Annual Oyster Fest This Weekend

Posted on Jun 3, 2011 in Local Issues

After the BP oil spill, the gulf oyster lost the national demand it had enjoyed in better seasons as customers worried about possible contamination. This weekend’s second annual oyster fest hopes to show that the local bivalve is as healthy and delicious as ever. The fest is being held next to JAX brewery on Decatur. Nearly twenty restaurants will be providing food. Acme Oyster House, Antoine’s, Bourbon House, Court of Two Sisters, Galatoire’s, and GW Fins will all be serving local seafood dishes. Not to mention that Drago’s will be bringing their world famous charbroiled oysters to the party. The Treme Brass Band will kick off the festivities on Saturday, and the festival will end on Sunday with a performance by Irma Thomas. Among other musicians, Bag of Donuts and Rockin’ Doopsie Jr. will be performing. Live music from local acts will be heard almost continuously throughout the festival, only giving up the stage to the festivals contests such as oyster eating and shucking. The local oyster industry, with help from WDSU and Shell, will offer free admission with food and drink for sale.
