Algiers Woman Attacked By Pitbulls; Owner Goes Unpunished

Posted on Feb 11, 2011 in Local Issues, Personal Injury

When Lauren Tarantino of Algiers investigated a commotion in her back yard, she discovered two pit bulls breaking through the fence to attack her Chihuahua and rushed out to protect him. She pushed one dog back through the fence and grabbed the second by the collar when it attacked.

The dog bit her nine times along her body and ruptured her Achilles tendon. The dog’s owner pulled the pit bull through the fence freeing Tarantino. She ran screaming into the front yard where she collapsed. By the time paramedics arrived, the pit bulls and their owner had gone.

Since then both dogs have been put down, but while Tarantino will be on crutches, the owner is free of any responsibility. The ASPCA and owners of well adjusted pit bulls will testify that the breed is not inherently aggressive, and that poor care from the owner is to blame. The owner of these unneutered dogs did not have any of the proper paperwork and allowed his dogs to roam off leash.

Tarantino is calling for a change in the law that will allow for responsibility to fall on the owner. Dog attacks are very serious and can lead to long lasting injuries.
