The city is only five days into 2011, and the murder rate is already on the rise. Along with the partying and tourists that accompany the Sugar Bowl and New Year’s Eve, New Orleans has seen a rash of murders. [caption id="attachment_1517" align="alignright" width="259"] Photo Courtesy of nola.com[/caption] In the early morning of Wednesday, December 29th, Renee Johnson was found by her neighbor lying in her front door. Ms. Johnson had been stabbed in the chest some time earlier and was unresponsive. She had remained in critical condition at University Hospital before finally succumbing to her wounds on January 1st. The NOPD declared her death the first homicide of the New Year. Not long after, early the next morning, a man was shot to death in his doorway by two gunmen on the 1800 block of St. Thomas Street. Police are investigating the identity of the gunmen involved and urge anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 822-1111. Kenner had managed to avoid any homicides until the body of 48 year old hair dresser Terry Johnson was found strangled along a wooded walking trail. He had last been seen at a New Year’s Eve party not far from where his body was found. Family members have said that Mr. Johnson had not been home since December 31st. While these incidents could surely disenchant anyone with the New Year, they should serve as a reminder that personal safety is a top priority.
