November 18th, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues by bloom | 2 Comments »

One of New Orleans’ fastest growing and most popular festivals, Po-Boy Fest, will be taking place this weekend.

The festival which has grown from modest beginnings drawing a crowd of 5,000 to Oak St, to a whopping 50,000 estimated attendants, will run Sunday from 10am-7pm at its usual location on Oak St between S. Carrolton and Eagle St.

Admission is free although the festival will be offering $150 VIP wristbands or $200 passes which include wristbands and guaranteed parking spaces.

Festival organizers have reported a number of new features this year include expanding the length of the festival area and the addition of a bike corral behind the Carrolton Ave Whitney Bank building as well as new seated-dining options.

An anticipated hot-item at this year’s festival will be the offering of newcomer, Blue Dot’s “Thai Pork Dough Boy”, a sandwich that reportedly involves the use of two doughnuts.

As always, Po-Boy Fest will also feature great live music including performances by: George Porter Jr., Flowtribe, The Revivalists, and Dee-1.

Orleans Parish DA Pushes for Removal of Criminal Court Judges

October 28th, 2011 | Posted in Courts, Local Issues by bloom | No Comments »

NOLA.com reported yesterday that Orleans Parish District Attorney, Leon Cannizzaro, has alleged that judges in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court are guilty of malfeasance, gross misconduct and should potentially be subject to removal from office.

Mr. Cannizzaro recused himself earlier this year from a probe into the Judicial Expense Fund but has provided a roadmap to state Attorney General Buddy Caldwell into what he views as the mishandling of funds by the 12 judges on the Criminal District bench in Orleans Parish.

According to the letter, judges have been known to illegally require convicts to pay into the fund under penalty of probation violation, failed to meet state-imposed auditing standards, and may have used funds to illegally pay medical and insurance benefits to themselves.

The Metropolitan Crime Commission also requested a state audit into the judges’ use of funds this summer to determine the legality of an estimate $2 million in supplemental health and life insurance policies that have been bought by judges this year.

It bears noting that Mr. Cannizzaro has admitted that during his time on the bench he may have been involved with these sorts of activities, although it appears that the statute of limitations for any liability on his part would have lapsed in 2010.

Hardy Boyz: Facing Multiple Legal Troubles

September 19th, 2011 | Posted in Celebrity Justice, Drugs, DUI/DWI by bloom | No Comments »

Matt Moore Hardy, 36, is facing legal troubles with driving while impaired. The police report claims Hardy was under the influence of drugs, not alcohol; the breathalyzer test was negative.

Hardy was on probation with his Wrestling company when State troopers charged him on Aug. 20 with driving while impaired after he crashed his 2009 Chevrolet Corvette into a tree. This arrest caused TNA Wrestling to fire Hardy.

Meanwhile, last week Jeff Hardy pleaded guilty to three felony drug charges and was sentenced to serve 10 days in jail and pay a $100,000 fine, followed by 30 months on probation.

Wright has allegedly confessed to the murder and decapitation of his wheelchair-bound son who suffered from cerebral palsy. Police say that motive is still not completely clear but that it would appear that Wright had tired of caring for the child. Jori Lirette’s head and body were found dumped outside of his home with Wright sitting nearby.

Kerry Cuccia of the Capital Defense Project of Southeast Louisiana has been appointed to defend Wright.

Saints Football Returns to the Superdome

August 12th, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues by bloom | No Comments »

With the controversy surrounding the NFL lockout now behind us for the most part, Saints fans are gearing up across the city for the team’s first pre-season game tonight at 8pm in the Superdome.

The Saints take on the 49ers tonight and will be looking to test out their new running backs including the newly acquired Darren Sproles and first-round draft pick Mark Ingram who will be competing with Pierre Thomas for the start.

The Black and Gold defense is an area where the lineup is still largely in the works and tonight’s game should allow frontrunners to emerge for starting positions.

Nicholas Cage’s Son in Trouble

July 6th, 2011 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

Sometimes for better or worse patterns of behavior form within a family, and for the Cage family it has been definitely for the worse. Actor Nicholas Cage’s son, Weston Cage, has been arrested for domestic violence just like his father.

Nikki Williams, Weston’s wife, was quoted before the incident as saying marriage was, “tough but wonderful,” and how, “communication is key.” Things quickly spiraled downward from there as police were called to their LA apartment the very next night.

In a fit of rage Nikki cut Weston’s arm with a broken bottle and threatened to throw herself off of their apartment’s balcony. When police arrived they arrested Nikki and Weston as they believed that both had been violent. A judge subsequently set their bail at $50,000 a piece, but at this time only Weston has been able to post bond.

Weston has posted on his facebook page that he has chosen to divorce his wife despite her pregnancy.

In April the couple held their nuptials in New Orleans with high hopes for a long, happy relationship. Things have obviously not gone as planned, and the couple is a long way from a functioning relationship.

Boy Overdoses Methadone from a Dumpster

June 1st, 2011 | Posted in Drugs by bloom | No Comments »

Richard Newkirk, a 32 year old resident of Ormond Beach Florida, is being charged with supplying a controlled substance to a person less than 18 years old and manslaughter after 14 year old Bryce Parson took a lethal dose of methadone.

Newkirk taught Parson and a 17 year old friend how to gather methadone from the dumpster behind a medical clinic, collecting two large bags of partially used bottles. He then brought the boys to his apartment where he consolidated the drug from each bottle and shared it with the teens.

The two boys eventually passed out, and Parson died sometime in the night. The next morning Newkirk awoke to find that the boy had been dead for some time. The Ormond Beach police are currently waiting on a toxicology report to find if Parson had methadone in his system.

Mississippi Threatens the City

May 11th, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues by bloom | No Comments »

On noon Tuesday the waters reached 17 feet, the highest it has been since the river began creeping up the levees, and with flooding in the Memphis area, officials must decide whether to open the Morganza floodway.

The Corps' "worst case prediction" map is courtesy of nola.com

Currently 72 bays of the Bonnet Carre have been opened , but experts speculate that even if the spillway diverts its maximum of 250,000 cubic feet of water per second, it may not be enough to prevent the river’s 1.5 million cubic feet from flooding. If this is seen to be the case, the Morganza floodgates will be opened to redirect an additional 300,000 cubic feet of water.

If the Morganza gate is opened, 3 million acres of land, including 18,000 acres of crops, would be flooded. Cities inside the Atchafalaya, including Melville, Butte Larose, and Krotz Springs would be flooded affecting over 24,000 people. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations have already been issued for some areas. Funneling the river into this area through a floodgate would also prevent many residents from collecting insurance payments as the flooding will not be a “natural disaster.”

However, the Corps of Engineers is not facing a Sophie’s Choice, as some of the Atchafalaya area will flood even if the gate remains closed. The Corps recently issued a map of the worst case scenario if the Morganza spillway is not opened and the levees are compromised. The map shows drastic flooding in the New Orleans area.
