Jazz Fest Schedule Announced

April 1st, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues by bloom | No Comments »

Festival season has officially begun and every weekend is filled with good food and good music, and the biggest music fest of them all is fast approaching. Jazz Fest has announced its schedule for 2011.

Now the difficult task of choosing which days to attend and which acts to see begins. Choosing whether to see The Nevilles or The Radiators’ farewell with friends will be a tough one for the fans of local acts, while Arcade Fire, fresh off their Grammy win, and Willie Nelson, fresh off his latest possession charge, will pit the hipsters against the hippies.

The festival continues to mix local acts and national celebrities with Kermit Ruffins on the same stage as Lupe Fiasco. Galactic playing before Wilco is a great example of what Jazz fest has become. The day is filled with great local food and music from great local bands, and the evening focuses more and more on big name acts.

The fairgrounds will be packed on April 29th, opening day, with Robert Plant performing, all the way to May 8th when the Nevilles play the last show.

Narcotics Officer Arrested for DUI after Wreck

March 25th, 2011 | Posted in DUI/DWI, Local Issues by bloom | No Comments »

Police responded to a traffic accident on Old Spanish Trail to find a fellow officer already at the scene. The driver of one vehicle was an undercover narcotics officer for St. Tammany Parish who could not pass a breathalyzer test.

The officer’s name and picture are not being released as it could endanger his family and fellow undercover agents. Despite his anonymity, he has resigned from his post in order to preempt termination. Given the nature of his job, the sheriff’s office could not ignore any indication of substance abuse or dependency.

The tandem of criminal charges and resignation is necessary but unfortunate as this was a first offense DUI and no one was injured. The officer will be paying for his mistake for a very long time.

If you or anyone you know is arrested for DUI, hopefully the charge will not have long term effects on your professional and personal life. To reduce the damage as much as possible, it is important to hire an experienced, skilled defense lawyer. Contact Bloom Legal at 504-599-9997, to arrange a free, no obligation consultation.

Mardi Gras Wrap Up

March 9th, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues, NOPD by bloom | No Comments »

The arrival of Ash Wednesday has signaled the end of this year’s carnival. It was a damp Mardi Gras season, but large crowds have led the krewes to declare 2011 a success.

A large number of raucous college students was due in part to the success of this year’s late carnival season. For the first time in recent years Mardi Gras occurred in March, which allowed students on Spring Break to make the trip into the city. Those who had worried about a low turnout were relieved to see St. Charles packed with revelers on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday’s torrential downpour forced Endymion to ride behind Bacchus and created one of the biggest spectacles since the super-krewe returned to its Mid-City route a few years ago. Parade goers were forced to camp out or arrive before sunrise to secure a premier spot on St. Charles’ crowded neutral ground. Gladly, the dual super-krewes put on a show that did not disappoint, and the festivities lasted well into the night; however, the season did have its share of sour notes.

While many marching groups performed without a hitch, the unauthorized Krewe of Eris was not so lucky. As we recently covered, the clash between marchers and police resulted in arrests and injury. It is always a unfortunate when legal troubles from Mardi Gras stretch onward into the rest of the year. If you or anyone you know was arrested this Mardi Gras, contact Bloom Legal at 599-9997, for a free, no obligation consultation.

Anderson Cooper has been named the Grand Marshal of Endymion, and host of, CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360,will be joined by the husband and wife celebrity pair of Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. Ripa and Consuelos met when they were both regulars on the soap opera All My Children. The rock band Train will also be riding with super krewe. At the Endymion Extravaganza local musician Trombone Shorty and pop legend Pat Benatar will be performing.

Oscar Nominee Andy Garcia of Godfather and Oceans 11 fame will reign over Bacchus this year. Orpheus carried the cast of HBO’s Treme through St. Tammany last night with second time rider Steve Zahn. The cast were treated to a concert by 80’s pop band Loverboy at the parade’s after party. “Working for the Weekend” was much requested and dutifully delivered.

The Show Must Go On

March 4th, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues by bloom | No Comments »

With an 80% chance of rain tonight, Mother Nature is not cooperating this carnival, but it takes more than a little rain to keep a good city down. All of tonight’s krewes will be rolling regardless of the weather.

Hermes, Krewe d’Etat, and Morpheus will all be running through uptown although 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled (Hermes rolls at 5:30 now), and Centurions will roll in Jefferson as scheduled. Be sure to pack your tents and umbrellas for the route in case of a drizzle, or if you’re lucky enough to live on the route, a house party would solve any precipitation problems. But then again, the weather’s warm and the beer is cold, so what’s the harm in a couple rain drops.

The million dollar question is whether or not Endymion will run tomorrow. The rumor mill is hard at work and is indicating that the super krewe will be running rain or shine, but there has been no official, definitive statement as of yet. If rain forces the parade to reschedule, Endymion will be rolling behind Bacchus on Sunday night combining Uptown’s and Mid-City’s crown jewels to form the super krewe singularity.

Rain or shine this will be a Mardi Gras to remember. Be safe and have fun. If you or anyone you know is arrested for DUI or public intoxication, contact Bloom Legal at 599-9997, so we can put it behind you and get you back to the party.

Man Sentenced to 20 Years After 9th DUI

February 16th, 2011 | Posted in DUI/DWI by bloom | No Comments »

Fifty-eight year old Jack Mizer is well acquainted with the legal proceedings for a DUI, having received 9 of them, but his latest charge will carry a heftier sentence than the rest. In court he was called the greatest threat to public safety in Maricopa County, AZ and ordered to serve two consecutive ten year sentences for felony counts of driving under the influence.

Mizer was previously charged with a DUI for drinking a beer while a toddler standing on his lap steered the vehicle. On February 6th of last year he was arrested for the eighth time after driving his truck in a bike lane with an astounding .293 blood alcohol level. After posting a $25,000 bond, Mizer managed to avoid incarceration for an impressive seventeen days before taking the wheel with a blood alcohol level of .278.

Many DUI charges are the result of a single poor decision, but in this case it is obvious that Mizer has a problem with alcohol abuse. In light of the number and magnitude of his offenses, which border on comical, the legal system was forced to take action to ensure the community’s safety.

If you or anyone you know has been charged with DUI, it is important to seek legal counsel. Contact Bloom Legal at 599-9997 for a free, no obligation consultation.

Slidell Proposes Allowing Drive-Through Alcohol Sales

February 9th, 2011 | Posted in DUI/DWI, Local Issues by bloom | 1 Comment »

In 1966 the Slidell City Council banned the use of, “drive-up windows and/or drive-through buildings… for any commercial establishment selling and/or dealing in alcoholic beverages.” But now after nearly 45 years, the city known for its conservative alcohol policies will consider repealing the ordinance.

Two local Slidell businessmen approached public officials to discuss the aging policy. One owns a daiquiri shop and the other a convenience store which plans to sell other goods in addition to alcohol through the drive-through. Talks have gone well, and the businessmen have gathered considerable momentum for their idea, including support from the mayor.

New Orleans and many other nearby parishes already allow the sale of alcohol from drive-through windows. A drive-through convenience store is located on Veterans and Bonnabel in Jefferson Parish, and daiquiri shops are spread throughout the city.

If the old ordinance is lifted, drivers must still abide by Louisiana’s open container law which prohibits any open alcoholic beverage from being kept in the passenger area of a car. A daiquiri is considered “closed” until a straw is inserted into the cup or the lid is removed. If you or anyone you know has been charged with violating the state’s open container law, immediate legal defense is needed to preserve your rights and to maintain the ability to effectively fight your charges. Free Cab Rides on New Year’s Eve

December 31st, 2010 | Posted in DUI/DWI, Local Issues by bloom | No Comments »

In their ongoing effort to reduce drunk driving accidents, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office will be offering free cab rides home to any Jefferson Parish resident who has had too much to drink this New Year’s Eve.

If you have a few too many drinks tonight, don’t get behind the wheel. Call 911 and request your free cab ride. You must tell the dispatcher your location, and a taxi will be sent to take you home. The program only allows for free rides from locations within Jefferson Parish to any residence in the parish. The program does not allow for free rides from any other area, including New Orleans.

If you are celebrating the new year, think ahead and plan a sober ride home. The Safe Ride Home Program should reduce the number of drunk drivers on the rode, but officers will still be patrolling the streets. If you or anyone you know is charged with a DUI, Bloom Legal can be contacted at 599-9997 for the best DUI defense in the city.
