Alabama Man Arrested for Involvement in Viral Post-BCS Video

Brian Downing, 32, of Smiths Station, Alabama, was arrested late Wednesday in connection with an incident that involved abusing an unconscious LSU fan at the Krystal on Bourbon Street. The event was videotaped and uploaded to the internet, where it spread like wildfire.

Police booked Downing on charges of sexual battery and obscenity. He was videotaped Jan. 9 “placing his genitals on an LSU fan’s face. The LSU fan appears to be heavily inebriated and practically unconscious,” a police statement said.

Downing surrendered himself to police peacefully after meeting with his attorney in New Orleans. He was encouraged to give himself up because of his family connection to Russell County, Ala., Sheriff Heath Taylor, who earlier Thursday had said Downing was on his way from Alabama to New Orleans to surrender.

One Party Ends, Another Begins

January 10th, 2012 | Posted in Local Issues, Mardi Gras, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

The pigskin revelry may be over in New Orleans after Monday’s college National Championship game, with Alabama shutting out LSU 21-0, but the city is far from done. Mardi Gras kicks off in just over a month, and another sports nirvana – the Final Four – will be hosted here at the end of March. Not only will New Orleans continue to be the focus of a powerful media lens, but the economic boom of thousands of tourists spending money on hotels, restaurants, and merchandise will grow even stronger. It’s a good time to be a New Orleanian!

Saints Move on in Playoffs – Next Stop: San Francisco

January 9th, 2012 | Posted in Local Issues, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

Saints' safety Roman Harper tackles 49ers quarterback Alex Smith

The Saints ended the Lions’ season Saturday night with a scintillating 45 to 28 victory. Their next stop on the road to the Superbowl are the San Francisco 49ers, who hold the #2 seed in the NFC and arguably boast the league’s best defense. This will be an extremely close game, for sure. Here are three key things the Saints need to do to come out on top:

1. Keep the pressure off Brees. The 49ers have an excellent defensive line in Aldon and Justin Smith, so Saints’ center Brian De La Puente needs to step up and protect the pocket so Brees has time to throw.

2. Score in the red zone. The Saints are only 7 for 22 on touchdowns scored in the red zone on grass this year. They will have to make the most of their opportunities in this game because the Niners allow red zone TDs only 25% of the time.

3. Maintain the run game. Much of the reason why Brees has been so deadly this season is that the Saints’ offensive attack is multidimensional with the addition of Darren Sproles and the strong play from both Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory. The Niners have the league’s best run defense. To win this game, the Saints must be a threat on the ground to create more opportunities to score.

The game kicks off at 4:30 PM Eastern time this Saturday, January 14th.

NOLA Ready to Kick Off 2012 Mardi Gras Season

January 7th, 2012 | Posted in Local Issues, Mardi Gras by bloom | No Comments »

A Tulane University professor’s new study released Friday shows that last year’s Carnival season brought in more than $300 million to the city, mostly generated by visitors. This year, expectations are even higher. Haydel’s Bakery, a local family-owned business, is gearing up to make over 60,000 King Cakes to meet demand this Carnival season. They’re even debuting a new flavor: chocolate brownie.

In addition to the usual Mardi Gras traditions, there are some new things to keep an eye out for this year. The all-female Krewe of Nyx will roll Uptown on the Wednesday before Mardi Gras. With 530 members and 20 floats, they will be the first, new full-fledged krewe in the city in 10 years.

It’s a welcomed newcomer to a celebration in a city that will once again have the eyes of the world on it come Fat Tuesday.

New Orleans’ Sporting Extravaganza Garners Nationwide Attention

January 6th, 2012 | Posted in Local Issues, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

The Washington Post ran a feature article today highlighting the massive upcoming weekend for New Orleans, both economically and culturally. “I think it’s going to be the biggest weekend we’ve ever seen in the city,” said Pam Randazza, owner of the Black and Gold Sports Shop in Metairie, La. “We’ve just been swamped.”

After the BCS Championship and the NFL Playoffs, New Orleans can look forward to the 2012 NCAA Final Four Tournament, the War of 1812 Bicentennial celebration, and the 2013 Super Bowl – not to mention Jazzfest or Mardi Gras.

“A friend called and wanted to book a table for 11 Saturday night,” said Ti Marten of Commander’s Palace. “I told him I couldn’t get my mother a four-top, let alone him an 11-top.”

New Orleans’ Officials Gearing Up for Historical Weekend

January 5th, 2012 | Posted in DUI/DWI, Local Issues, NOPD, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

New Orleans’ mayor Mitch Landrieu says his office is teaming up with state and federal officials to make this weekend’s events go as smoothly and as safely as possible. On Saturday, the city will host the first round of NFL Wildcard Playoff games, with the Saints hosting the Detroit Lions, followed by the BCS National Championship game – LSU vs. Alabama – on Monday.

New Orleans' Mayor Mitch Landrieu

“It’s really important that this event be successful, that it be safe and that it works very, very well. We expect almost 250,000 visitors to be with us between now and Monday … All of these events, in total, are going to approximate a 500-million dollar economic impact, which is in excess of what the economic impact is from a Super Bowl,” said Landrieu.

The mayor said 740 police officers will be deployed around the Superdome, in the French Quarter and downtown areas to keep everyone safe. State troopers will augment the force, particularly along major thoroughfares leading into the city.

Make sure to be smart and stay safe this weekend, whether participating in the festivities or not. Police officers and state troopers will be extra vigilant regarding suspicious or reckless behavior. Bloom Legal Video Blog: DWT (Driving While Texting)

January 5th, 2012 | Posted in Courts, Local Issues, NOPD, Traffic by bloom | No Comments »

Attorney Seth Bloom of Bloom Legal LLC in New Orleans, LA explains the new trend of DWT (Driving While Texting) citations.

Many jurisdictions across the country and in New Orleans and Metairie in particular are considering new regulations to allow police to issue citations for Driving While Texting. These new regulations would allow law enforcement to move beyond the mere issuing of a traffic ticket but would become more like DWI/DUI violations making drivers subject to prosecution in the future.

If you or anyone you know have been arrested for or cited for Driving While Texting or any other traffic violation in New Orleans or Metairie, contact Bloom Legal 24/7 at 504-599-9997 or online at www.bloomlegal.com for a free case evaluation.
