Derrick Shepherd, second from right, apologizes to his family and constituents after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering at the federal courthouse on October 10, 2008. His bond was revoked Friday and he was jailed after being arrested on outstanding warrants. A federal judge ordered former state Sen. Derrick Shepherd to jail on Friday, where he will remain until his February sentencing on corruption charges.

The decision by U.S. Judge Carl Barbier included revoking Shepherd’s bond, which had allowed him to remain free on bond after he pleaded guilty in a federal money laundering conspiracy.

The judge’s actions come on the heels of Shepherd’s arrest earlier this week on outstanding warrants, including one in New Orleans for domestic violence. According to New Orleans Municipal Court documents, Shepherd last February hit a woman and bit her. He is scheduled to stand trial in that case next week.

“One of the warrants is from last February and arose from a disagreement with a woman friend, ” Shepherd’s lawyer, John Reed, is reported as telling the Associated Press earlier this week.

Shepherd was arrested in Jefferson Parish in 2008 after he broke into his ex-girlfriend Thaise Ashford’s home, punched her in the stomach and took her cell phone and $100.

Those are seperate charges and are pending, according to court records.

U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said that until Shepherd’s arrest, federal prosecutors did not know he had any outstanding warrants.

“When we found this out, we brought this to the attention of the court,” Letten said.

A minute entry filed in the federal court record shows that a federal prosecutor filed two documents under seal before the judge ordered Shepherd to be remanded into custody.

Paris Hilton’s Brother Makes 20K Bail After DUI - What’s Fair 4 Bail?

Feb. 13th 2008

paris-hilton-celibate.jpgBarron Hilton, Paris Hilton’s kid brother, got busted for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) early yesterday morning – the time of his Malibu arrest was 8:05 a.m.  Seems Barron took a breathilizer (did he check with his lawyer first? I doubt it) and blew a .14 (.08 is the legal limit)In the car with him, an unidentified girl and a fake ID.   Sounds like Barron had a wild night, right?

Barron spent the day in jail, and around 6 pm  that evening, he was released after posting $20,000 bail.  So, what’s bail — and what’s a fair bail amount?

OJ Simpson - No Slam Dunk Here

Sep. 24th 2007

oj.jpgThe Guardian has compiled a good overview of what happened in Vegas with OJ Simpson in the hotel room with all the sports memorabilia.  The Associated Press has prepared a timeline, as well.

TMZ is quoting a story from the New York Post, where six weeks ago OJ allegedly appeared at the home of his handyman, girlfriend Christine Prody in tow, to accuse the guy of sleeping with Prody and threatening to kill him.  Included in the story is a reference to several domestic dispute calls made by Prody over the past 10 years.

Meanwhile, OJ’s being used as the prime example of a “well implemented asset protection strategy” by at least one law firm, while the Goldman Family is attempting to seize the Vegas sports memorabilia as part of collecting on its civil judgment and they’re investigating the possibility of money stashed in offshore bank accounts.  They’ve already obtained OJ’s Rolex, after seeing the watch in a news photo covering the Vegas caper.

OJ made bail, even though several pundits were arguing that it would never happen.  He left Nevada, and returned to Florida without a problem.  He’s said to be pleading “not guilty” to the charges.

What’s next?
