Reggie Leaves for Miami

July 29th, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

For nearly half a decade, Reggie Bush has been a Saint. A matchup nightmare for opposing defenses, Reggie gave New Orleans a dynamic explosiveness that helped the offense become one of the league’s elite. But all good things must end, and Reggie has made a 2 year deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Reggie, who had a legendary college career, has always dreamt of being a feature back in the NFL, but Sean Peyton prefers to spread the ball around. Peyton utilized Reggie as a single, crucial piece to a complicated offense. This disparity came to a head during contract negotiations.

Payton could only pay him for the assisting role he was currently playing, but Reggie wanted the pay of a feature back. When Miami offered Reggie a central role in their offense to replace their aging backs, Ronnie Brown and ex-saint Ricky Wiliams, along with $10 million for two years, Reggie couldn’t resist.

Reggie was eager to make an amicable exit using Twitter to wish goodbye to the crescent city: “To the city of New Orleans you will always have a place in my heart I love you guys [you] are my family & I will never forget our good times” and “I wish the New Orleans Saints the best of luck I will always be a fan! The team, coaches, and fans will be deeply missed!”

The last time Reggie made waves on Twitter was when he mentioned recently drafted Mark Ingram as his de facto replacement, but he may have chosen the wrong back as his successor. The Saints have acquired the lightning fast Darren Sproles from the San Diego Chargers. His also offers a similar skill set to that of Reggie. He may be undersized, but Sproles is extremely talented on both offense and special teams. Not to mention his complete lack of connection to the Kardashian family. It is going to be a good year.

Saints Update: Lockout Over

July 22nd, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

After months of tense negotiations between players and owners, the lockout has finally come to an end. With the first preseason game only three weeks away, the agreement came just in time for both Saint’s fans and local businesses.

The Saints should be better prepared to handle an abbreviated training camp than most teams, benefiting from the team workouts put together by Drew Brees. The player led workouts were a boost to the team’s unity and to Bree’s popularity in the city, but a rumored scandal had some members of Who Dat Nation doubting their leader.

Amid an ongoing PR battle with hall of fame linebacker Sam Huff, reports surfaced that Brees was trying to cut a special deal for himself. The disagreement between Huff and Brees has been discussed extensively elsewhere, and Brees has taken to Twitter to deny any claims of a special deal. While the rumors around the MVP quarterback may be dispelled, Reggie Bush has a few of his own to deal with.

Ever since USC running back Mark Ingram was drafted, speculators have predicted Reggie’s departure from New Orleans, and the new collective bargaining agreement has added fuel to the fire. Under the new CBA, the Saints only have $11.7 million in cap space to deal with 26 possible unrestricted free agents. That compares to the $11.8 promised to Reggie for the 2011-2012 season. With a promising rookie in the lineup, Sean Peyton might be tempted to free up some valuable cap space.

Even with Reggie’s future unclear, Saint’s fans can look forward to a great season of football.

March Madness Comes to the Big Easy

March 23rd, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues, Sports by bloom | 2 Comments »

The teams have been whittled from sixty-four to sixteen, and two teams will see their journeys end tomorrow night in the New Orleans Arena. #3 BYU will face #2 Florida, and #4 Wisconson will face off against #8 Butler.

Of all the teams, Butler is the most surprising contender. Aided by a pair of last second fouls, the Bulldogs defeated Pittsburgh to make them the first #1 seed to be sent home. Theirs will certainly be a game to watch tomorrow night, but not to the exclusion of the high scoring Florida on Friday. The Gators have relied on their incredibly deep bench in their road to New Orleans, and their game against BYU will be electric.

It is slightly ironic that the university voted the most sober in the nation, BYU, will be taking the trip down to the party capital of the South. Coach Dave Rose plans on letting his team see the city during their visit, but he will be careful that his team doesn’t party before the big game. Of course with all the stress of the NCAA tournament a drink might be just what the Cougars need.

If you catch the game tomorrow night, we recommend finding a sober ride home; however, mistakes are made, and if you are charged with a DUI, Bloom Legal can fight for you. Contact us at 504-599-9997, for a free, no-obligation consultation.

The Saints Are Headed to Seattle. Are You?

January 6th, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

After the Saints clinched a playoff spot with their win over the falcons, Who Dat’s had been anxiously awaiting the results of last weekend’s game between the Rams and the Seahawks to find out our first round opponent. Hotels book up and tickets sellout sometimes hours after the opponent is known. However, after Seattle defeated the Rams, Saints fans have been slow to book their trip.

With the exception of London, Seattle is the furthest away from New Orleans that the team will ever play, and fans are not ready to make the trip. Drive time from the Super Dome to Qwest Stadium tops out at 43 hours, making the trip unfeasible for most regardless of gas prices. For those that think the railway might be an easier route, a train ride would take 3 ½ days each way. While flying seems to be the only reasonable option, Amy Mcgee, a local travel agent, has not received a single inquiry into Seattle area travel.

Few may be making the trip, but questioning Who Dat Nation’s enthusiasm would be a mistake. One reason most fans are staying home is the near certainty that the Saints, an 11 point favorite, will win. Most fans are undoubtedly holding out to buy tickets to the second round game against either Chicago or Atlanta which will be in high demand.

Since New Orleans fans might not make it to the game, it is time for Who Dat Nation’s out of state population to shine. When nola.com asked saints fans to write in about their travel plans, every response came from fans in the Pacific Northwest. Even two fans from Canada responded, proving that Who Dat Nation has gone international.

This just means that the party is going to stay home, and New Orleans will be swarmed with black and gold jerseys on Saturday. We’d like to remind fans to be safe after the game and to ensure a sober ride home, but if you find yourself in DUI trouble Sunday morning, contact Bloom Legal at 5999-9997 for expert legal defense.

New Orleans Saint Will Smith Arrested

New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was arrested early Saturday morning on charges of domestic abuse battery.

According to reports, Smith was observed near a Lafayette nightclub around 2 a.m. having an argument with his wife. Sources state that he took hold of his wife by the hair and began to drag her down the street prior to being being arrested.

A report on nola.com states that posts from a Twitter user with the handle rockie 91, apparently from Will Smith’s wife (Smith’s wife’s name is Racquel), have surfaced indicating that the incident was a misunderstanding and had been blown out of proportion.

Domestic abuse battery is a misdemeanor offense and carries a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and 6 months in jail.

It remains to be seen how Smith will plead in this case although sources speculate that the incident may have escalated primarily due to Smith’s presence in the public eye.

If you or someone you know are arrested and charged with domestic abuse and/or battery, contact Bloom Legal today at 504-599-9997 to schedule a free consultation to discuss the details of your case.

Hornets Lead Off a Big Weekend in Sports

November 19th, 2010 | Posted in Local Issues, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

Tonight the resurging Hornets take on the sans-Lebron Cavaliers and coach Byron Scott. This will be the first match up between New Orleans and Scott since he was fired as the Hornets’ head coach nine games into the ’09 season. Despite his termination no grudges were held, and the coach has remained close with his old players. Chris Paul admitted that it will be strange to see his friend and mentor on the opposing bench but that after tipoff it will be strictly business. The 5-5 Cavaliers will have a tough time breaking through the stifling Hornets defense which has kept every opponent to less than 100 points.

While the Hornets are having a stellar season, the Saints have had to struggle through injury. Currently standing one game behind the Falcons at 6-3, they have fallen short of their lofty post-super bowl expectations. The injury bug has bitten hard claiming much of the secondary and the running game, but the team will start to get their legs back as Reggie Bush returns this week against the Seahawks. Many have blamed the Saints’ lack of offensive pop on the absence of Bush’s dynamic skill set which allows the coaching staff to dictate many of his on field matchups.

With the Hornets facing their old coach, Reggie Bush’s value being tested, and LSU trying to erase the memory of an embarrassing loss to Ole Miss last year, this weekend’s games carry added pressure. Let’s hope this does not get in the way of some otherwise favorable matchups.

Given that this is a particularly big weekend for Louisiana sports there will be a large amount of partying taking place throughout the city and surrounding areas. It is important to make sure to make sure to be responsible and to use cab services and designated drivers when possible.

REMINDER: NOPD WILL BE CONDUCTING A DWI CHECKPOINT IN UPTOWN NEW ORLEANS TONIGHT (FRIDAY)!

While we certainly do not condone such behavior, we understand that people make mistakes. If for some reason you are arrested this weekend, contact Bloom Legal at 504-599-9997 to schedule a free consultation to discuss the details of your case.

NO Hornets Introduce New General Manager

July 27th, 2010 | Posted in Local Issues, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

The New Orleans Hornets introduced their new General Manager, Dell Demps this afternoon at a press conference held at Emeril’s Delmonico.

Demps, who is well regarded as a result of his work with the San Antonio Spurs off the court as well as his former talent on the court with the Warriors, Spurs, and Magic is a welcome addition to the organization and expected to produce strong results.

The announcement of Demps’ arrival to the team along with recent news that Chris Paul intends to continue playing in New Orleans rather than submitting a trade request are positive indications that the Hornets may be shaping up to be strong contenders in the Western Conference next season.

Miranda & You: Speak Up After Recent Supreme Court Ruling!

June 1st, 2010 | Posted in Legislation, National Issues, Sports by bloom | No Comments »

On June 1st, the Supreme Court of the United States drastically
limited the Miranda rights of those detained by the police in Berghuis
v. Thompkins, 08-1470. In a 5-4 decision, the Court ruled that an
individual must verbally invoke his or her right to remain silent.
Remaining silent no longer invokes the Miranda right and the police
may continue to interrogate a detainee until that person verbally
states their intention to remain silent. Newly appointed Justice
Sotomayor dissented in a strongly worded opinion that criticized the
Court’s ruling because it provides for a suspect to waive his or her
Miranda rights, without showing or stating this intention, by
remaining silent and not speaking.

Going forward, the public should be aware that if they are detained
and interrogated by police, they must verbally invoke their right to
remain silent, as well as their right to an attorney.

Valentine’s Day usually ushers in a flurry of chocolate, flower and jewelry sales. But this year the holiday comes in the midst of a citywide love affair with the New Orleans Saints and at the height of the Mardi Gras season, forcing local retailers to resort to creative tactices to keep consumers interested.
