Pedicabs Coming to New Orleans

July 8th, 2011 | Posted in DUI/DWI, Local Issues, Traffic by bloom | No Comments »

Partiers now have one more option for a safe ride home after a late night in the French Quarter. Despite a prolonged political fight, pedicabs have finally been approved by the City Council.

The council first voted to approve the use of pedicabs on a trial basis back in 2010, but concerns later arose over how the limited permits would be issued. Having settled on a lottery system to decide who gets a portion of the 45 permits initially available, the city is ready to welcome its newest industry.

Those who frequent the quarter will roll their eyes at the prospect of allowing one more private industry to clog traffic along with the taxis and horse carriages that scuttle down Dauphine, and their concerns may be warranted. Major cities and tourist areas across the country allow pedicabs with mixed results. Residents of San Diego have grown to loathe the cyclers as a nuisance, while they are viewed as a convenience in other areas. The month long trial period may reveal how the new transportation system fits with the city.

Either way, a cheap, convenient option for a sober ride home is a welcome experiment. The pedicabs are expected to concentrate in the French Quarter and Central Business District with a few operating near Tulane and Loyola universities.

NOPD Receives Award for Most DWI Arrests in State

March 16th, 2011 | Posted in Local Issues, NOPD, Traffic by bloom | No Comments »

Yesterday at an awards luncheon hosted by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission in Baton Rouge, the NOPD received an award for the most DWI arrests in the state of Louisiana by a municipal police department.

Additionally, Officer Chris Laine was recognized for having the most DWI arrests by an individual officer in 2010.

While this is certainly an indication of the progress being made by the NOPD as a law enforcement body in light of recent reform procedures, it is also a reminder that driving while intoxicated is not only dangerous and irresponsible but also very likely to result in arrest and legal trouble. That being said, at Bloom Legal we understand that people make mistakes and shouldn’t necessarily have their lives permanently affected as a result.

If you or someone you know are arrested for DWI, contact Bloom Legal at 504-599-9997 for a free case evaluation to determine if we would be able to assist you.

DWI Checkpoints Get a $350,000 Improvement

January 26th, 2011 | Posted in DUI/DWI, Local Issues, NOPD, Traffic by bloom | 1 Comment »

Orleans and Jefferson Parish are both planning to purchase special vans to be used in future DWI checkpoints. Each van comes with a $350,000 price tag and a number of features to aid officers.

The Breath Alcohol Testing vans (or BAT vans) will have breath-testing machines to help identify inebriated drivers, an interview room, and a holding cell that can accommodate multiple offenders. There will also be a bathroom for the officers’ and arrestees’ convenience. In order to expedite the legal process, a separate room in the vans will allow officers space to begin paperwork on arrests. Many cities across the country have already begun using the BAT vans, including Baton Rouge and Mobile.

The sheriff’s office is spending a lot of money to take drunk drivers off of the road, and the best way to avoid legal trouble is to use a designated driver or a taxi; however, we understand that mistakes can be made under the influence of alcohol. If you or anyone you know is charged with DWI, call Bloom Legal at 599-9997, so we can fight for you.
