Slidell Memorial Hospital CEO Ousted after 2nd DUI

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 in DUI/DWI, Local Issues

By all accounts Bob Hawley has been successful in his career as a health care administrator. Before Hawley joined Slidell Memorial Hospital in 2000, the hospital was under was barely solvent and hamstrung by incompetent management. Hawley helped improve patient care, construct a $19 million regional cancer center, and acquire funding for a $25 million for an emergency room expansion. On July 13 police saw Hawley’s BMW northbound on the Causeway swerving between lanes. After the officer got behind the BMW, Hawley accelerated to 15mph over the speed limit and failed to use his turn indicator. At this time the officer decided to pull the hospital administrator over and deliver a blood alcohol test. Hawley’s BAC on that night has not been released, but it was determined that he was inebriated. The next day the rest of the hospital’s board met to discuss Hawley’s future. Despite all his success with the hospital and the board’s personal respect for the man, they decided that it was necessary to fire Hawley from his position as CEO. This is a sobering reminder of the long term effects a DUI can have on someone’s personal and professional life.
