Edwin Edwards Released from Prison

Posted on Jan 14, 2011 in Local Issues

Years after Edwin Edwards exited the spotlight, his memory has shifted into the realm of history. The expansiveness of his personality and corruption is remembered alongside the likes of Huey P. Long, but from a man with more political comebacks than losses, it should be no surprise that Edwards has reemerged. After his release to a Baton Rouge halfway house, he will serve the final six months of his sentence under house arrest at a relative’s home. When Edwin was in the political arena his ability to demean an opponent and entertain an audience with humor made him massively popular. His political skill won him four terms as governor despite the rampant corruption that would eventually put him in jail. Lavish gambling trips to Las Vegas while in office lent to his larger than life mystique, but it was not known at the time that he would pay of his gambling debts with dubious cash filled briefcases. The people who made him so popular while in office have wasted no time in lending their support upon his release. Edwards has been named as the Grand Marshall of Crowley’s annual Rice Festival. Edwards held his first political office as a member of the Crowley City Council in 1954.
