Parole Granted for a Kidney Donation

Posted on Jan 3, 2011 in National Issues

Jamie Scott has served sixteen years in a Mississippi prison all the while receiving semi-daily dialysis treatment. Miles away her sister, Gladys Scott, has been imprisoned for the same crime, but Governor Haley Barbour will grant both women freedom under the condition that Gladys donate a kidney to her sister. The peculiar story has attracted national media attention, but what first seemed to be an amusing oddity has revealed a more sinister history. The Scott sisters had each been given two life sentences for serving as accomplices in a robbery that only netted $11. Their incredibly harsh sentences have been widely attributed to a racially prejudiced justice system. The NAACP and other civil rights organizations, who have rallied for sisters' release, are very pleased with the result. While it is heartening that justice was finally served, the sixteen years that the sisters spent in prison serves as a reminder that the justice system still has flaws.
