How to Enjoy Jazz Fest Responsibly

Posted on Apr 24, 2017 in Criminal Defense, Jazz Fest, Uncategorized

It’s that time of year again. The days are longer, the temperatures are rising, and festival season is underway. We love this spring-time feeling, where everyone and everything feels a little more energized. So, we fully understand the excitement that surrounds each excellent outdoor festival that brings people together as we transition from winter to summer. This month, we know many people are looking forward to Jazz Fest. Officially known as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, this annual celebration of our great city’s music and culture is one that no one wants to miss! Last year, more than 425,000 fans attended the festival, and for good reason! From the great line-up of musicians to the food, there’s so much to enjoy. This year, the event will run from April 28th to May 7th. But before you go out, you may want to think about how you’re getting back home. Often, outdoor festivals are a popular place to relax with an alcoholic beverage or two. While this can be a reasonable way to enjoy your day, it can also lead to some poor decisions and dangerous behavior when it comes time to go home for the night. As a New Orleans criminal defense law firm, we know just how easy it can be for individuals to get behind the wheel after having one too many drinks, or get involved in an altercation with a police officer, because you left your better judgment at home. We understand. That’s why we’re here to offer a few tips to enjoy Jazz Fest and any festival this season, responsibly and free from criminal charges.

It’s Easier Than You Thought

First, we always recommend being mindful of how much alcohol you’re consuming. A day out listening to great music offers countless opportunities to drink. But if you’re only drinking alcohol, you’ll run the risk of getting dangerously drunk. Even without the high temperatures, the alcohol would be enough to pose the risk of dehydration. So, make sure that you’re balancing yourself out with lots of water throughout the day as well. Second, decide who is going to be driving everyone home. Carpool with your friends so that there only needs to be one designated driver. Or, consider taking a rideshare like Lyft or Uber, so that everyone can get in on the fun and no one has to worry about being sober behind the wheel. Third, keep an eye on your friends throughout the day. Especially at crowded festivals, it’s easy to lose track of your friends amidst the hustle and bustle of the excitement. While there’s nothing wrong with parting ways if you want to see a different musician, for example, it can be helpful to meet back up at various points throughout the day. This way, you can check in to see how everyone is holding up, and make a decision about how much more merriment it’s wise to partake in. Fourth, do your best to respect the rules of the festival. The regulations are there for a reason, and usually that reason is to keep you safe! While it may not feel like that after you’ve had a few drinks, it’s important to still abide by the rules, or else risk being removed from the festival all together! A festival experience can quickly go from great to, well, not so great. It happens to the best of us. And when it does, you can rest assured that Bloom Legal will be by your side.
