Man Killed in I-10 Crash: Single Car Accidents Can Still Be Deadly

Posted on Jan 27, 2017 in Personal Injury, Speeding Tickets

When most people think of deadly accidents, they imagine a massive car pile-up, or fiery crash involving multiple vehicles. While these certainly can be fatal situations, they are not the only kinds of accident that can take a life. Although it may not be the first kind of accident that comes to mind, single car accidents pose just as great a risk of being deadly as do their multi-car counterparts. While of course it is dangerous for two or more cars to hit each other, it can be just as destructive for a car to hit a pole, guardrail, or any number of other objects on or near the roadway. As a result, it’s important to remember that, even if the road is clear, you still need to remain alert so that you avoid finding yourself in a life-threatening situation. A recent story reminds us of the importance of being aware of your surroundings, whenever you’re behind the wheel. Around 3 a.m. on January 16th, a 42-year-old man was driving on I-10 near the Morrison Road exit. According to police, he lost control of his pickup truck, running into the base of a pole. The impact caused the car to turn on its side, before sliding along the wall of the interstate. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of this post, investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident. In the meantime, we send our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. In the wake of this accident, we cannot help but to wonder what caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle. It’s worth noting that the crash happened in the early hours of the morning. During this time of day, there are two possible causes that come to mind: either the man was impaired or he had been driving for an extended period of time and had reached a point of exhaustion.

You Have Options When You Get Behind the Wheel

Both alcohol and sleep deprivation pose risks to drivers, as they inhibit clear perception. As it turns out, both are also entirely preventable. Preventing drunk driving is as easy as taking a taxi or rideshare or having a friend drive you home. You can also prevent exhaustion in a number of simple ways. First, give yourself rest stops along the journey. While you may be in a hurry to reach your final destination, it’s far better to make a few stops than to become involved in an accident due to your impatience. During your breaks, you might consider having a power nap to recharge, or getting a cup of coffee. A nap or a dose of caffeine may be all it takes to rev yourself back up so that you can drive safely. Additionally, it may help to keep the temperature inside the car cool, so you’re not lulled to sleep by being too warm. And playing upbeat music can also be a quick fix to remind you to stay awake. Just make sure the music doesn’t create more distraction in the process. Due to the fact that many single car and multi-car accidents could be prevented, we urge you to remember to make your safety, and the safety of all those around you, the first priority every time you get behind the wheel. However, we also recognize that accidents happen. A New Orleans speeding ticket lawyer knows that many drivers are in a rush to get where they need to go. And, as a result, these drivers end up putting numerous lives in jeopardy, often causing collisions in the process.
