On Wednesday, July 1, Armer Bright, the Orleans Parish public school system’s diversity contracting director, admitted in U.S. District court his role in the Ira Thomas janitorial services fraud conspiracy. Bright admitted to rig a janitorial services contract with Ira Thomas and another unnamed person in exchange for a bribe. After being asked whether he committed the  crime, he agreed after a long pause. Bright was seen outside the courtroom with his head in his hands. According to the allegations, Bright approached a cooperating witness in 2013 to offer a janitorial contract with Ira Thomas for a $5,000 cash bribe. They discussed the contract at length over several months. Ira Thomas has already pleaded guilty and resigned from his position from the school board back in March when the allegations first were made. Seth Bloom, current OPSB President, said he was “thoroughly disappointed that any fraud or any misconduct took place.” Bright’s sentencing is set for September 23, 2015.
