The Social Implications Of Drunk Driving

Posted on Mar 8, 2013 in Personal Injury

Drinking and driving is a serious crime that can result in very negative consequences. From expensive fines to serving jail time, getting arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol can completely ruin a person's life. While there are many harsh penalties put into place for those who are caught drinking and driving, the social implications can make the entire thing even worse. While most people already understand the legalities involved with a DUI, not everyone understands the social implications involved with this type of crime. For more information about the social implications associated with a DUI, please read on. Social Implications Of A DUI 1. Criminal Record. When a person has been charged with a DUI, this charge will cause him or her to have a criminal record. Even if a DUI does not result in jail time, a person charged with this crime will forever have a criminal record because of it. When a person has a criminal record, it can make it difficult to get a job or rent an apartment. 2. Loss Of License. A person charged with the crime of driving under the influence of alcohol will usually lose his or her license for a certain period of time. Without a license, it is very difficult to get from one place to the next. Not having a license also means having to depend on friends and relatives for rides to places like work, and this can place a strain on friendships and relationships. 3. Trouble With Relationships. Sometimes, being charged with a DUI can ruin relationships, especially with a spouse or significant other. A DUI is a serious offense that can cause trouble with the people who are closest to the person charged with this criminal offense. While it is nice to think a significant other will not judge his or her mate for getting a DUI, being charged with this offense can put serious strain on a relationship. 4. Judged As A Person Who Makes Bad Decisions. Another negative social implication of being charged with a DUI is that the person charged with this crime will be viewed as an irresponsible person who makes bad decisions. Unfortunately, even those closest to the person charged with a DUI will not be able to control the negative judgments and opinions that spring up when they learn about the DUI charge. When a person is charged with a DUI, it can bring upon many life changing issues that are not always easy to deal with. Along with having to pay expensive fines and possibly having to serve jail time, a DUI can result in many negative social implications including strained relationships, negative judgments and opinions from friends and loved ones, loss of license, a criminal record, and difficulties getting an apartment or a job. For all these reasons and just because it is a dangerous thing to do that can result in injury or death, the best decision a person can make is to refrain from driving while under the influence of alcohol.
