[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Photo Courtesy of Wikipedia"][/caption] A new law that will take effect on August 1 in Louisiana will require convicted sex offenders to post their criminal status to social media profiles. The law supplements the current requirements that individuals convicted of sex crimes report their status to local organizations, police, schools, and neighborhoods. Although many social networking sites prohibit registration by convicted sex offenders in their terms of use, the new law would make it a crime for registered sex offenders to join a social networking site without posting their criminal status. The new offense, which is a felony, carries penalties including jail time of 2-10 years and fines of up to $1,000. It is not currently clear where exactly a sex offender must include their registration status although speculation could yield that such status might be included in the Activities or Interests section of a profile.
