NOPD issued a statement via e-mail yesterday indicating that an unauthorized parade (identified by some as the Krewe of Eris) which took place in the Marigny neighborhood resulted in 12 arrests and injuries to 6 police officers.

According to NOPD, the Fifth District Task Force received a 911 call indicating that a group of approximately 200 individuals was marching in the street and playing instruments near the intersection of Chartres and Elysian Fields.

When officers approached the group to inform them of the need to disband, revelers allegedly began slashing the tires of 2 police vehicles and throwing glass bottles and bricks at the officers. The incident resulted in the arrests of 12 of the assembled individuals for charges ranging from disturbing the peace to aggravated battery on a police officer. At the time of release of the statement, 6 officers had been treated for injuries in hospital.

This incident reminds us that while Mardi Gras can be a time of great fun and good times in the city of New Orleans but that whenever large crowds assemble and alcohol is involved, the potential for danger is always present.
