pamela-anderson.jpgPam Anderson married Paris Hilton’s exboyfriend (and Shannon Doherty’s ex-husband) last October, and now she’s filed suit, asking a court to annul her marriage to Rick Salomon

Remember annulment?  That’s what Renee Zellweger got from Kenny Chesney awhile back.

So, what’s the difference between an annulment and a divorce?  Should you seek an annulment? Continue Reading »

Britney Spears’ Kids – What about Child Protective Services?

February 20th, 2008 | Posted in Celebrity Justice, Local Issues, National Issues by bloom | No Comments »

britneymtv.jpgWell, Britney Spears’ two boys have not seen their mother since mid-January, and it’s not clear if they are going to be able to be near their mom anytime soon.  Reuters reports that the Commissioner (aka judge) presiding over the Kevin Federline – Britney Spears custody fight has denied her request to alter his ruling from last month and there’s not any word on when that bar to Britney having any access to her boys will change.

Still, despite all the news stories – drug use, bipolar disorder, rehab, 5150 stays, reckless driving – where’s Child Protective Services in all this?  Shouldn’t they be involved here?  Continue Reading »

anguilla-sandy-ground-overlook.jpg Thinking of taking a cruise, leaving New Orleans for a sweet spin through the Caribbean?

Have you seen those inciting ads — 75% off vacation packages for a long weekend, or even a couple of weeks?

Heck, Affordable Tours is offering a 4-day cruise on Carnival’s Fantasy cruise ship through the Caribbean and with a Mexico stop or two, all for $250! (It leaves February 28th and gets back March 3d, if you’re interested ….)

Lots of people are taking advantage of these deals — and packing in the added bonus of a New Orleans holiday before jumping on board a Carnival or Royal Caribbean or Norwegian cruise ship and heading out to sea…. We’re almost back at pre-Katrina vacation volume.

In fact, Western Caribbean cruises are the most popular packages being sold today, and New Orleans is one of the most popular ports for Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Caribbean vacations.

And yet, no one is paying much attention to the sobering realities.

Did you know …

–  you may not be protected by American law, or U.S. authorities, once you are aboard ship and underway?

Almost every cruise ship is registered in a foreign country, and flies a flag of that nation – not the United States.  The laws of that country, as well as international treaties, may decide your claim, not the federal or state law you may assume applies.  At least the cruise line will argue this to be the case.

–  serious crimes occur onboard everyday — including sexual assaults, thefts, even unexplained disappearances?

Your risk of being raped is reportedly higher on a cruise ship than in any major American city, according to the International Cruise Victims organization.  Continue Reading »

Paris Hilton’s Brother Makes 20K Bail After DUI – What’s Fair 4 Bail?

February 13th, 2008 | Posted in Celebrity Justice, Courts, DUI/DWI by bloom | No Comments »

paris-hilton-celibate.jpgBarron Hilton, Paris Hilton’s kid brother, got busted for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) early yesterday morning – the time of his Malibu arrest was 8:05 a.m.  Seems Barron took a breathilizer (did he check with his lawyer first? I doubt it) and blew a .14 (.08 is the legal limit)In the car with him, an unidentified girl and a fake ID.   Sounds like Barron had a wild night, right?

Barron spent the day in jail, and around 6 pm  that evening, he was released after posting $20,000 bail.  So, what’s bail — and what’s a fair bail amount? Continue Reading »

Britney Spears – What If Her Dad’s the Bad Guy?

February 6th, 2008 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | 1 Comment »

britney_spears2.jpgIt’s not news that Britney Spears hasn’t been close with her parents, and that she doesn’t trust her dad, Jamie Spears.  What if Jamie Spears is an evildoer, and Britney’s right to distrust him?  Right now, he’s acting as conservator of Britney’s $40 million estate….

The New York Times and the BBC report that Los Angeles County Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz ordered a psychiatric determination on Monday, to determine if Britney Spears is capable of making her own decisions.  This means that Commissioner Goetz has appointed a mental health professional of her choosing, to evaluate Britney and thereafter, report his/her professional findings back to the Court.  His deadline?  February 13.

Why did Commissioner Goetz order this on Monday?  She’s already placed Britney in a mental health facility, and she’s already ordered Jamie Spears and local attorney Andrew Wallet to act as co-conservators of Britney’s affairs.

What if Britney’s Dad, Jamie Spears, is the Bad Guy – and now, he’s got her checkbook? Continue Reading »
