Larry Birkhead, Howard K. Stern & Debra Opri: Will Opri’s Lawsuit Reveal the Video?

September 26th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

blondeambition32.jpgLarry Burkhead has been counter-sued this week by his former attorney, Debra Opri.  Debra Opri is claiming that Larry Birkhead harmed her reputation when he appeared on Larry King Live and said that Opri was a source for Rita Cosby, as she was writing her book, Blonde Ambition.  Opri’s alleging that she’s had to spend $200,000 on a “crisis management team” to “salvage” her reputation.  TMZ has put the Opri counterclaim online, if you want to read it.

What’s going on here? Can lawyers sue clients? Why would Opri sue Burkhead? And, will this force the revelation of the source materials for the Rita Cosby book?  Will we get to see the video here? Continue Reading »

OJ Simpson – No Slam Dunk Here

September 24th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice, Courts by bloom | No Comments »

oj.jpgThe Guardian has compiled a good overview of what happened in Vegas with OJ Simpson in the hotel room with all the sports memorabilia.  The Associated Press has prepared a timeline, as well.

TMZ is quoting a story from the New York Post, where six weeks ago OJ allegedly appeared at the home of his handyman, girlfriend Christine Prody in tow, to accuse the guy of sleeping with Prody and threatening to kill him.  Included in the story is a reference to several domestic dispute calls made by Prody over the past 10 years.

Meanwhile, OJ’s being used as the prime example of a “well implemented asset protection strategy” by at least one law firm, while the Goldman Family is attempting to seize the Vegas sports memorabilia as part of collecting on its civil judgment and they’re investigating the possibility of money stashed in offshore bank accounts.  They’ve already obtained OJ’s Rolex, after seeing the watch in a news photo covering the Vegas caper.

OJ made bail, even though several pundits were arguing that it would never happen.  He left Nevada, and returned to Florida without a problem.  He’s said to be pleading “not guilty” to the charges.

Britney Spears’ Court Order – Things Are Getting Serious Now, Boy

September 20th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

britney_spears.jpgBritney Spears was out partying again, within hours after the end of this week’s Custody hearing.  At the hearing, the Court determined that “there is a habitual, frequent, and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol” by Britney, and ordered her to have random drug testing twice a week, as well as testing clean for at least 12 hours before she has possession of her children.  (There’s also lots of counseling and classwork required for both Britney and K-Fed, and future court dates are set.)

TMZ has posted the Commissioner’s Order online  in case you want to read what Commissioner Gordon has required of both Britney Spears and Kevin Federline.

So, what’s really happening here?  Did Britney win or lose?  Did K-Fed get something here?  Continue Reading »

Britney Spears’ Custody Fight: Today’s Secret Witness

September 17th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

britneymtv1.jpgGloria Allred represents a “secret witness” who filed a declaration in Britney Spears’ custody fight with Kevin Federline, a man who she reportedly described to FoxNews as, “[y]ou may recognize him as we walk into court, but maybe not.  He is not famous.  He’s just someone who’s concerned about the kids.”  Needless to say, the declaration helps K-Fed and hurts Britney.

What is all this about a secret witness?  Isn’t this America?  How can someone just write something down, and use it against Britney?  Isn’t that unfair?  What about due process? Continue Reading »

Britney Spears Crazy Stupid or Self-Destructive? Can Anyone Stop This?

September 12th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

britneymtv.jpgWe’re entering the 3rd day of What Happened to Britney Spears: Simon Cowell has given his opinion (she’s toast) and some poor guy has a big hit on YouTube, crying and asking everyone to stop bashing his beloved Britney.

Kanye West says MTV exploited her to get ratings for its awards show; MTV did get a big ratings boost this year, credited to Britney’s appearance.  But perhaps Miki Taylor, entertainment writer for MSNBC, says it best:  “Girlfriend has some serious issues.”

What, if anything, can be done to help Britney? Continue Reading »

Larry Birkhead, Howard K. Stern & Rita Cosby – Will Larry Sue Part II

September 10th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

blondeambition31.jpgWill Larry Birkhead Sue?  Larry Burkhead says he will, so does Howard K. Stern.  Nothing’s been filed yet.  Before pondering why not, let’s review what’s happened since our last post:

1.  DannieLynn turned one last week, and there was a big party for her in Kentucky: both Larry Burkhead and Howard K. Stern were there.

2.  Rita Cosby’s book Blonde Ambition did hit the shelves, and was No. 56 at amazon.com at the time of this post.

Of course, the price has been slashed in half, and it’s getting very bad reviews.  Readers are pointing out that the book has no index, no footnotes, no documentary support; one comparison to the heavily-documented John Belushi bio Wired has been made.   (Of course, Bob Woodward of Watergate fame wrote that one.)

And, in a truth is stranger than fiction report: this morning, amazon.com is offering a twofer deal: get Rita Cosby’s book AND O.J.Simpson’s If I Did It, where proceeds go to the Goldman Family, for $29.36.  That tells you something.

3.  Larry Birkhead just won a big round in his suit with Debra Opri: she doesn’t get a quiet arbitration, they’re headed for trial. The arbitration clause didn’t hold.

4.  Some crazy guy just sued Howard K. Stern for $100 million.  Who?  The brother of Cosby’s source for the Stern-Burkhead gay lover story, Jackie Hatten.  Why is he in jail?  He serving 6+ years prison time for making criminal threats against Anna Nicole and actually attacking her neighbor.

Okay, so … will Larry sue? What about Howard?  Continue Reading »

Mattel Toys – 3 Recalls in 36 Days: What’s all this Danger of Lead Paint?

September 4th, 2007 | Posted in National Issues by bloom | No Comments »

elmorecall.jpgMattel Toys is issuing its third product recall since August 1st, many due to toys manufactured in China where lead paint was used.  In the US, any toy with 0.06% lead paint must be recalled.  That’s not much.

The Associated Press reports that 80% of the world’s toys are made in China, so expect more recalls to follow Mattel’s lead (pardon the pun).

What toys are being recalled?  And, what’s the real danger of lead poisoning anyway? Continue Reading »

Larry Birkhead & Howard K. Stern: R the Rumors True? Will Larry Sue?

September 3rd, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | 3 Comments »

blondeambition3.jpgLarry Birkhead is mad as a hornet, telling TMZ.COM that he’s going to sue author (and former MSNBC correspondent) Rita Cosby as well as ”other individuals … over confidential information in my custody case” if the rumors (click here to read them) about what’s in Cosby’s new book, Blonde Ambition: The Untold Story of Anna Nicole Smith’s Death, are true.

Larry Birkhead’s also threatened anyone who prints excerpts or other information from the book with a lawsuit too — including OK! Magazine, who is scheduled to spotlight the book in its next issue.

Of course, on the same day, OK! Magazine cancelled its $1.7 million deal with Larry Burkhead for an exclusive photo shoot of DannieLynn’s first birthday.  E!News quotes OK!’s editor’s explanation that the cancellation was due to OK!’s discovery of “explosive” and “shocking” allegations that “would not allow” OK! to promote what it’s calling “this family’s highly questionable relationship.”  Larry says OK! is just mad because he’s made another million-dollar deal with US Magazine for a cover story on DannieLynn.

Larry Birkhead tells TMZ that it was author Rita Cosby who referred him to attorney Debra Opri, and it’s reasonable to assume that his reference to “others” with confidential information about the custody fight includes his former lawyer.

So, what’s the legal skinny on this? Will Larry Burkhead sue? Sue who? Continue Reading »
