Chris Benoit Tragedy: What About Protective Orders?

June 26th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | 2 Comments »

chris-benoit_169×171.jpgChris Benoit killed his wife and seven year old son this past weekend, before taking his own life.  You’ve heard about this already — everyone wants to know why, and the details are leaking out, a drop here and a drop there.

Today, authorities revealed that the wife had been bound: both her hands and her feet were tied up.  The boy was smothered to death.  And, there were Bibles left by each body.  Tomorrow, more horrific information will fill the media.  There’s probably a True Hollywood Story already in the works.

What about that 2003 request for a protective order that Nancy Benoit made?  Divorce papers show that Chris Benoit was barred from the home, or from coming within 100 yards of his wife and son.   The order was effective until Nancy requested the Judge to dismiss the whole thing a few months later.   What about it?  Do these things ever help?

Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, LiLo – What’s A Reputation, Anyway?

June 24th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

britney_spears2.jpgParis Hilton is finishing her jail time: her first interview out of the clink will be on Wednesday with Larry King.   Paris, as you’ll recall, skyrocketed to big time fame with the release of a sex video on the internet.  For all things Paris, check out TheHiltonFiles.

Lindsay Lohan announced last Thursday that she is extending her stay in rehab.   Meanwhile, MTV reports that American Apparel is selling hoodies like the one Lindsay was wearing, passed out in the front seat of her car, by using the paparrazi photo we’ve all seen with zonked Lohan’s mouth hanging open.   Get one for $40.00.

Britney Spears’ album has been shelved for now; fans are being told to wait until 2008Photos are still appearing of Britney seriously unclothed, and rumors continue of her heavy drinking.

Do any of these three have any reputation left to damage under the law?

OJ’s “If I Did It” and SICKO by Michael Moore: Online 4 Free

June 20th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice, Internet/Technology by bloom | No Comments »

sicko-poster-425.jpgTMZ.COM reports that it has “obtained” a copy of OJ’s manuscript “If I Did It,” and follows that up with an excerpt from the document — a purported description of the murder itself.  OJ relates this in the first person, and a mysterious pal named “Charlie,” is present at the scene.  Who’s Charlie?  Doesn’t say.  You can download the entire thing online, right now, for free — according to LinkBunnies.

Meanwhile, Michael Moore’s new documentary, SICKO, was available online for free on MySpace, provided by at least two different MySpace pages, as well as  YouTube and BitTorrent.  I couldn’t find an online copy available today….

What if you download this free stuff?  Will the Copyright Police be knocking on your door?

Lawsuits That Make You Want to Slap Someone

June 18th, 2007 | Posted in Personal Injury by bloom | 2 Comments »

parishilton1.jpgParis is still in jail today; her dad came to visit yesterday afternoon – it was, after all, Father’s Day.  Sister Nikki is telling all who’ll listen that Paris isn’t in jail for DUI … she’s in jail for driving on a suspended license.

Meanwhile, Kristy Swanson was arrested last night in Ontario, for assaulting her boyfriend’s ex-wife.  She’s filed a counter charge against the ex.  And, discovery proceeds in the pants lawsuit — an administrative law judge is suing Custom Cleaners for $65 Million because they ruined a pair of his pants.  One pair.  According to a Canadian Press report, Judge Pearson actually cried on the stand last week, as he described the loss.

Then, there’s the Port St. Lucie case, where the owner of the Delmonico Grill has sued the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, and its restaurant reviewer – a woman named Patricia Smith – because they gave the Grill a bad review (here’s the review).

Vince McMahon Isn’t Dead: Here’s Why

June 13th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

vince_mcmahon_2.jpgLast night, at Philadelphia’s Wachovia Arena, Vince McMahon made an appearance as part of the WWE RAW — and afterwards, as he left the event and jumped into his limo, the car apparently blew up (here’s the video).  Today, various wrestling sites, as well as assorted radio stations and even some news shows, are reporting that Vince McMahon is “presumed dead.”

Okay.  He’s not dead.  Legally, if Vince McMahon had been the victim of a car bomb, there would be County Continue Reading »

Google Street View: The Ultimate List (Privacy? What’s That?)

June 11th, 2007 | Posted in Internet/Technology, National Issues by bloom | 1 Comment »

800px-eyes.jpgLast week, I was collecting a set of links from Google Street View for the blog – but today, I bow to StreetViewGallery where over 100 different, entertaining “StreetViews” have been collected thus far.

I’m assuming that 692 Escondido Road, Stanford, California, remains a favorite.   (Use the zoom function for the area behind the guy walking on the sidewalk, you’ll see why.)

What’s GoogleStreetView?  Google has sent out a couple of guys in a van (here’s a pix of the van) to roam the country, taking 360 degree shots of the streets they’re driving – starting with the bigger (and maybe, cooler) cities and then expanding out.

The goal?  Maps with real-life views, which is great for people who give directions like, “turn left at the McDonald’s and then go down a couple of lights, and then take a right at the high school.  If you past the KFC, you’ve gone too far.”  PaperStreet points out how Google StreetView will be very helpful for a lot of people, finding law offices and the like.

The problem is: that van is really, really doing its job.  When the site launched last week, a woman named Mary Kalin-Casey checked out her home address in Oakland and discovered you could see her cat in the window.  Mary complained on BoingBoing, and others soon followed.   Like the ones complaining about the StreetView of a guy relieving himself by the side of the road, for example.

Larry Birkhead: Sue Your Lawyer

June 5th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | 3 Comments »

larry_debra2.jpgLarry Burkhead has his own website, www.larrybirkhead.net.   The majority of its posting involves Larry Burkhead clarifying legal issues, including his silence on the issue of his attorney’s bills.  Based upon other information on the page, these postings may be somewhat dated.  The lawsuit that Burkhead filed last Friday is not mentioned.

What we do know, thanks to TMZ.COM and others, is that Larry Burkhead has sued his former attorney.  CNN reports that the lawsuit is based upon malpractice, based upon factual allegations that, among other things, Debra Opri misrepresented herself as a family law specialist, and that she promised to work on the case without a fee and then held over a half million dollars from Burkhead as payment for legal fees.   Fraud allegations are involved, as well.

Want to sue a lawyer, too – just like Larry Burkhead?  You have the legal right to sue your lawyer, just the thought may make you smile, but there’s a thing or two to consider before you take the plunge.

Paris Hilton – What Happens When U (& Paris) Go To Jail

June 4th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | 1 Comment »

parishilton.jpgLast night, Paris Hilton evaded the media hoard surrounding the Lynwood County jail in LA by surrendering to authorities at a downtown LA all-male facility.  Paris was then transported to the Lynwood facility.

Starting today, she’s serving half of her sentence, or approximately 3 weeks, in a 12 foot by 8 foot cell that contains two bunks as well as a toilet.  So far, she doesn’t have a roomie.

Just so you know, Paris has not had any special treatment thus far — assuming media reports are accurate.

So, exactly what happens when you are arrested and jailed? Continue Reading »
