Lindsay Lohan v Paris Hilton: A Lawyer Compares the 2

May 30th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

lindsay_lohan915_461f527247fce-t.jpgBy now, you’ve probably seen Lindsay Lohan passed out in a car this past Sunday night, after being rushed to the hospital on Saturday for minor injuries when she ran her car into a telephone pole.

And, you’ve probably chuckled at last week’s photos of Paris Hilton carrying a Bible and the book The Power of Now.

Paris is already going to jail.

From reports that Lindsay’s lawyer escorted her back to rehab admist rumors circulating that a “usuable amount” of cocaine had been found in Lindsay Lohan’s car as well as gossip that she’d been drinking over the holiday – well, it’s a big hint to criminal defense attorneys that Lindsay‘s attorneys are concerned about the possibility of jail time.  Lindsay‘s arrest on Saturday was for suspicion of driving under the influence,  what happens on the cocaine discovery is an open question right now.

What does this mean to you?  Who’s in the worst position right now – Paris or Lindsay?

Today’s Take: Seth on Sports (NBA FINALS)

May 30th, 2007 | Posted in Sports by bloom | No Comments »

The Western Conference finals heated up last night with the Cavs holding off the Pistons to bring the series even. Lebron James stepped up with 25 points to defeat a relentless Detroit squad that kept it close until the end before James made two clutch free throws.  Richard Hamilton’s late attempt to distract James seemed not to interfere with James and his focus on the final shots.

MySpace: Celebrity Lists, No; Sex Offenders, Yes

Odds are, you or someone you know has a MySpace page.   Every 2008 Presidential Candidate doesParis Hilton does.  Heck, even Kevin Federline does.

MySpace doesn’t provide a list of celebrity pages, confirmed to be authentic.  Some bloggers are doing that: check out RandomCrapOnline.Com (gotta love that name) and Bumpshack.Com.   (The New York Times is keeping track of the presidential candidates.)

However, MySpace has compiled a list of over 7000 registered sex offenders with pages on its site, and removed all their MySpace pages.  Beginning this week, MySpace is releasing this information to the different states, giving state authorities a list of offenders for their area who were using the MySpace “social networking” site.   On Tuesday, for example, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan received a list of 584 names from MySpace.

American Idol: Jordin or Blake? Is It Rigged?

May 20th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

villianc.jpg

It is down to two, folks: Jordin and Blake are this year’s Kelly and Justin over at American Idol.

Many are still reeling from last week’s shocking departure of Melinda Doolittle — a truly gifted singer that may felt was a shoe-in for this year’s Idol.   Some are doing more than that — several bloggers (including Gossip Galore and Media Take Out) are saying that over at the Howard Stern Show, they’re calling the show rigged with producers, not the voters, picking who stays and who goes …. It’s said to be an official “expose.”

Forever Stamp and the New Postal Rate Change

May 15th, 2007 | Posted in National Issues by bloom | 1 Comment »

foreverstamp.jpg

Back in March, the Forever Stamp debuted.  In April, you could buy them but you couldn’t use them.  Starting this week, you can.  Initial price?  Forty-one cents — the new first class postage rate, effective May 14

What’s the big deal?  Once you buy them, you can use them.  Even if the postage rates go thru the roof, your little Forever Stamp that you got this week will still be good to go.

The US Postal Service is very, very excited about this new concept.  Others, not so much.

Lots of bloggers are discussing the Forever Stamp as an investment strategy, including Sarah Gilbert at AOL Money&Finance, as well as Lifehacker — and Frivolous Motion,  who has a pretty funny financial analysis of the whole thing.

Is there some legal lesson to be learned in this news item?  Well, maybe the need to buy a bunch of two cent stamps now – for those of us who have a bunch of the old 39s and bills to pay ….

Sheryl Crow Joins Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Meg Ryan

This weekend, Sheryl Crow announced on her website that she has adopted a newborn baby boy, naming him Wyatt Steven.   As we all know, she’s joined the club with Madonna, Meg Ryan, and Angelina Jolie as celebrity single moms.

One big difference, though: Sheryl adopted a child from the UNITED STATES.  Madonna’s son is from Malawi, Angelina adopted (while single) from Cambodia, Meg Ryan from China.   Of course, lots of arguments will probably flow for and against Sheryl Crow’s domestic adoption … as well as the whole celebrity-adoption-as-publicity argument.  (For fodder on that, check out the latest interview of Angelina Jolie in Reader’s Digest – it’s free, online.)

Legally, is there a big difference?  There can be.  It can cost more in time and money to adopt through an overseas agency.  People can pay tens of thousands of dollars in fees, travel expenses, agency expenses, and the like.    Continue Reading »

Paris Hilton: U R Helping Her – Yes, You Are. Really.

Paris Hilton remains in the news, and one of the top web searches of the day.  She’s rehired her publicist, she’s filing an appeal, she’s asked California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for a pardon.  Even her mother got media play as she told reporters “this [sentence] is a joke” and “a waste of taxpayer money.”  And on Paris’ MySpace page, Paris is asking people to sign her petition because she “provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives.”

Paris fans have launched www.freeparis.org – where you can sign a petition asking she be freed, along with buying tee shirts, bumper stickers, mugs, and the like.  There have been over 6 Million visits to Paris’ MySpace page, and her fans have also started their own MySpace site, FreeParisNow.   There’s a rally in New York on Thursday.

Then, there is the Anti-Paris movement.  Gawker’s “Don’t Free Paris” tee shirts are on back order.  Citizens for a Better America have their Go Away Paris site, also with merchandise.  (They even have a theme song.)  And, celebrities are starting to criticize Paris – Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York among them.

And guess what?  This ALL HELPS PARIS.  Every last bit of it.  Every last “Go Away Paris” web click helps Paris Hilton.  Yes, it does — and here’s why.  Continue Reading »

Paris Hilton Goes to Jail – The Law & The Paris Petitions

May 6th, 2007 | Posted in Celebrity Justice by bloom | No Comments »

parishilton.jpg

Paris Hilton tells TMZ.COM that she feels she’s been treated unfairly, and there are reports that her attorneys are already in the process of appealling her 45-day jail sentence, issued on Friday.  Meanwhile, Paris has fired her publicist and claims he told her it was okay to drive with suspended license for “work reasons.”

Well, in Louisiana, she’d be right if she’s applied for, and got, a “hardship license.”  What would happen to you (or Paris) here, if you got caught driving with a suspended license? Continue Reading »

Stop JunkMail, TeleMarketers, and Spam (& Congrats to Brit!)

May 2nd, 2007 | Posted in Legislation, National Issues by bloom | No Comments »

250px-junk_mail_collection.jpg

Annoying and wasteful, that’s the nicest thing you can say about all this stuff.   Junk mail is especially threatening to the environment: just look at some of the facts that the Native Forest Network has accumulated:

44% of all junk mail is thrown in the trash, unopened and unread.

Approximately 40% of the solid mass that makes up our landfills is paper and paperboard waste.  By the year 2010, it is predicted to make up about 48%.

100 million trees are ground up each year to produce junk mail.

If you want to stop junk mail in your mailbox, those determined telephone marketers that fill your voice mail, and that obnoxious, unwanted e-mail, then there are several web sites with detailed lists — BloomLegal’s already sorted thru them into a Best Of List, below.

Oh, and congrats from NOLA to LA native Britney Spears on her successful return to live performing last night in San Diego!  Read the review at MTVNews.com….
