Targeted by Traffic Cameras? We have information and camera locations!
Drivers across New Orleans are certainly aware by now of the increased presence of traffic ticket cameras throughout the metro area. Travelling as little as 5mph above the speed limit trigger a traffic camera and result in costly fines ranging from $75 - $160!
80% of all speeding tickets in the metro area are now issued by these fixed installation cameras.
Camera ticket installations now exist to detect violations including: Bus Lanes, Red Lights, Speed Limits, and Stop Signs. When detected by a camera, the system's license plate recognition system takes a picture of the alleged violator's license plate and issues a ticket weeks later by mail.
With traffic tickes generating millions in revenue for government projects in Orleans and Jefferson Parish, many are beginning to wonder whether the red light cameras are for safety or really to compensate for city budget deficits.
How to Equip Yourself Against Camera Tickets
If you use GPS navigation devices, many of these systems have databases to detect camera locations. In many cases it is possible to enable settings in your device to alert you of the presence of nearby cameras.. These databases may in some cases be update in near-realtime. (The use of GPS devices to locate speed cameras is illegal in some jurisdictions.)
The Impact of Traffic Cameras on the Local Economy
Traffic camera tickets are causing problems in more ways than annoying New Orleans citizens...they are also keeping tourists from returning, Betsy Owens spoke highly of her New Orleans vacation until she got her mail delivery, she explains, "I received a $75 ticket from your "Photo Safety Program." A traffic camera had recorded my car -- brace yourself -- going a death-defying 33 mph in a 25 mph zone. According to the instructions in the citation, I am to mail my check to "ViolationInfo.com," a private company located in Tempe, Ariz., that presumably gets a cut of the action."
Additionally, traffic cameras have been implicated in instances of identity theft. Cases have arisen in which individuals receive phone calls from scam artists posing as "traffic cops" and asking alleged 'violators' for their personal identity and payment information to pay the costs of nonexistent fines. These tickets may keep tourists from returning! Furthermore, peoples identities have been stolen from "traffic cop" phone calls asking them to pay their fraudulent fines. Scare tactics of warrants for an arrest or a jail sentence convince these people to give their credit card number, SS#, billing address, et al..
